APPLYING FOR COLLEGE

Post-secondary education is an important part of building a life's project, that plan designed by each one of us to achieve those important life goals. The college application process is a journey characterized by self-discovery through the evaluation of interests, aptitudes, personality, and learning styles.

Support is a valuable resource for any individual applying for post secondary education.

It is important to stress that starting as early as middle school, students should focus on planning their secondary experience along with their family and counselor in order to have a smooth college application process.

Current recommendations by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) state that there should be no more than 250 students to each school counselor. However, from 2009 to 2010, the student-to-school-counselor ratio in the majority of US school districts was 459-to-1.

These data demand a comprehensive counseling model, which includes careful testing, curriculum planning, faculty and family involvement and college partnerships (Holcomb-McCoy, 2017). Students need to work with their support system to carefully ponder their aspirations and professional ambitions. It is never too early to start working on college readiness: literacy skills, class enrollment, grades, and extracurricular activities (Hallett & Tevis, 2017).

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, OECD report a global trend suggesting that “education and skills hold the key to future wellbeing and will be critical in restoring long-term growth, tackling unemployment, promoting competitiveness, and nurturing more inclusive and cohesive societies” (2014).
